Terra Incognita

students and alumni of the Photography Department of Łodź Film School

By definition, Terra Incognita concerns unknown areas, not knowing, something different and alien which is hard to explore and get acquainted with. These words can also refer to the photographs presented at the exhibition. Nowadays when we mainly talk about our emotions, when the paradigm of photography changed to suit the needs of young artists, where photography is not an independent medium any more, this attitude becomes a personal and significant matter.

“Terra Incognita” reflects the specificity and uniqueness of Łódź Film School, thanks to which combining various means of expression characteristic of film and photography has had a great impact on the works of the students who are the authors of this exhibition. These are Justyna Bugajczyk, Justyna Chrobot, Paweł Giza, Hubert Humka, Weronika Jędrzejczyk, Irenka Kalicka, Katarzyna Maluga, Agata Mariańska,Sonja Orlewicz-Zakrzewska, Alex Raczyński, Martyna Strzelczyk, Bartłomiej Talaga, Karolina Wojtas, Adelina Woś, Mateusz Woś and Krzysztof Żabski.

The language used by the students and alumni of Łódź Film School invited to this exhibition stems from their need to express themselves. Talking about themselves becomes most important to them. About their needs, anxieties and obsessions. About their sensitivity, About their state of mind. About their feeling of the world.

Terra incognita – the unknown land, the white area on maps, that which has not been seen yet. Can this term be used for the presented photographs at the time when the paradigm of photography changes in front of our eyes together with every new usage or technological development? Can it be a personal and deep message at the time of “visual excess”? Can it meet the required needs of “expressing Oneself”, of that which is deepest and impossible to get to know, which goes beyond norms, arouses hidden obsessions, creeping anxieties and other demons hiding in the shadows…

The exhibition of works of the students and alumni of the Photography Department of Łódź Film School can be a mental and emotional journey through inner terra incognita. It allows us to delve into this hardly known – often invisible – the world of what is hidden, of what, even if seen for short moments, always escapes clear-cut perceptions and opinions. Anna Maria Zarychta
